Bank of America is one of the largest lender/servicers in the United States as a result of their acquisition of Countrywide Home Loans. They also purchased Merrill Lynch, which owned First Franklin - a major sub prime lender. As a result of their acquisition they were part of a lawsuit settlement with several State Attorney Generals, which prompted the launch of the National Homeownership Retention Program
